TAKING THE SONGS OF THEM CREEPY CRAWLIES TO THE WORLD (SORT OF)

5. WHO'S SONG IS IT ANYWAY?

I’ve been a bit discombobulated recently.  On the one hand I’ve started a fabulous new job, we’re off to Europe as a family in July and I recently learned the words for Heatwaves by Glass Animals.  But on the other hand, I’ve been a bit down in the dumps musically. Our record is finally finished which should be an occasion for celebration, but, frankly, I’m just relieved that 10 months of trying to get 4 grumpy middle-aged men with all their personal responsibilities and commitments into the same room at…

4. AGEING, UP-CLOSE GLORY

With 60,000 daily releases I can’t rely only on Spotify to take the music of Them Creepy Crawlies to the world.  I learned this early in the journey so at some stage I’m really going to have to fire up our social media channels which, frankly, I’m totally nervous about.  You see, I work for a successful SME with 40,000 followers on Instagram and a burgeoning Tik Tok community.  Its success is inextricably linked to the effective engagement with customers, and we have a team of 4 that spends maybe 2 hours…

3. SPOTIFY STRESS ENGINE

Despite my wife’s non-negotiable support, I really had no idea how or where to start my campaign to take the music of Them Creepy Crawlies to the world.  I had a vague and naive plan to build followers on Facebook and Instagram whom I would encourage to stream my songs on Spotify.  But I had no idea what this encouragement would look like or, indeed, how to create the content. Anyway, shouldn’t I focus on selling tickets to gigs because didn’t you have to have zillions of streams to make the smallest bit of…

2. IT'S MY WIFE'S FAULT

I'd just picked up 40 CDs of our 3 track EP, Go, and played it to wife Vicky and kids Joal (21) and Eve (19) on the way home from the pub.  They said they really liked it.  But they’re going to like it, aren’t they, because I’m husband/dad - it’s just one of those family non-negotiables like getting deodorant on Father’s Day. But, no, they actually did seem to really like it, and both kids added a song to one of their playlists (another non-negotiable?) And later that evening after my wife had listened…

1. IN THE BEGINNING

Early in 2021 Them Creepy Crawlies had a bunch of unrecorded tracks.  Our previous visit to the studio had produced a couple of low-fi, unmastered EPs, one of which, Insecticide, became the 11th most played record in 2020 on Adelaide’s indie radio station, Three D Radio. We wanted the new record to have creative input from the engineer and we were recommended Matt Hills who is twice ARIA nominated and has an eclectic portfolio of artists including Midnight Mares, The Systemaddicts and The Empty Treats
